More info on Robbie found HERE

Robbie is an original member of the Pacific Express brass section and part of the Abdullah Ebrahim group on many recordings and live shows.

Some of his numerous recording credits include Spirits Rejoice, with whom he performed for a number of years, The Genuines, The Rockets and Juluka. Though best known as an alto saxophone player. Robbie is a band leader, an innovative arranger, multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer of beatty jazz tunes. He has always remembered the need to entertain and though a serious and very capable jazz musician he has never been afraid to play in pop, rock and dance bands.

Together with Basil Coetzee, the two saxophonists were admired for their uncanny musical synchronicity. Their close harmony playing as heard in the Pacific Express recordings, in the Sabenza group and with Ebrahim, on the seminal Mannenberg session, are a testimony to a musical understanding between two players not often heard.

Robbie has turned to his Khoi San roots and the early Cape history as inspiration for his releases to date. This theme is carried further in his forthcoming recordings, where he has recorded his own arrangements of traditional Goema songs in a jazz format. The new album is scheduled for release in 2004.

Though not in the best of health, Robbie has continued to tour with his Sons of Table Mountain. He recently visited Cuba as part of a cultural/musical exchange program and has just completed filming for a documentary on his musical life, provisionally entitled, Bra Robbie van die Elsies.

September 2003.

Robbie Jansen - Vastrap Island:
The bad boy of Cape Jazz and fine alto saxophonist performs real Cape Music. After the success of Sabenza, Robbie who is a talented all round entertainer, decided to take the Cape music theme a step further. At times using programmed beats mixed with live percussion and including electric guitars and vocals, he created a landmark album. The title avers to Robin Island, the infamous political jail. Robbie explored Khoi San myths and his own interpretations of his roots on this great album. SEK101 - 1991
